Nearly a decade into the e-commerce era, the growth in online holiday shopping has shown few signs of slowing down, according to executives and analysts.

Fueled by Web searches for iPods, Elmos, gift cards and video game consoles, among many others, online retailers are expecting sales to increase by about 20 percent this year, or about the same amount as in 2005.

Shopping carts with a following Meijer tracks patrons' movements using radio tags

If you've pushed a shopping cart at the Meijer Inc. store in Oshtemo Township in the past two weeks, a computer chip may have silently tracked your path and the time you spent there.

Carts there were temporarily equipped Oct. 18 with electronic tags that chart and time each shopper's passage through the store, according to Mark Kahler, the store's guest-service-lines team leader.

An average commercial unit on Fifth Avenue of about 1,000 square feet, at its most expensive stretch near the junction of 57th Street, now costs around $1.35 million a year.
